Symptoms of Kidney Failure
Early Symptoms of Kidney Failure
Kidney Failure Associated With Phospho-soda and Other Oral Sodium Phosphate Products
If you have used Fleet Phospho-soda, OsmoPrep, Visicol or another oral sodium phosphate product as a bowel-cleansing regimen prior to a colonoscopy or colon-rectal surgery, you may be concerned about kidney failure.
Phospho-soda, when taken in a double dose as recommended by the manufacturer as a bowel-cleansing regimen separated by 10 to 12 hours (two 1.5 ounce bottles), has been linked to an increased risk of acute kidney failure (also called acute renal failure in the healthcare profession).
If you are concerned that your kidney function is worsening following usage of a pre-colonoscopy bowel-cleansing regimen like Phospho-soda, OsmoPrep, Visicol or another oral sodium phosphate product, you should share your concerns with your doctor as soon as possible.
The following information on this page regarding symptoms of kidney failure is not intended to serve as medical advice or a medical diagnosis tool. It is provided for general information only, and should be supplemented with information from your physician.
Some Symptoms of Kidney Failure
Some signs that your kidneys are not functioning as they should include:
- Urination becomes irregular or nearly stops altogether
- Urine becomes a dark color
- Blood in the urine or in the stools; which is sometimes referred to as coffee grinds in the stool
Dehydration is another symptom of possible kidney failure. Some signs of dehydration include:
- A dry or sticky mouth
- Your eyes stop producing tears
- Poor skin turgor (this means that when you pinch your skin, it is slow to resume its natural shape)
- Rapid heartbeat
If you suffer any combination of these symptoms, you should seek medical attention. Your doctor will perform blood tests and other tests to diagnose the problem and attempt to determine the cause of these symptoms. If you are experiencing kidney failure, then blood test results should show increased creatinine levels and other abnormal findings. Depending on the severity of your symptoms and the stage of kidney failure, you may be hospitalized right away so that you can undergo emergency dialysis or other treatment.
Consult an Experienced Products Liability Lawyer: You May Be Entitled to Financial Compensation
If you experience kidney failure or any type of kidney problems after using an OSPS like Phospho-soda, OsmoPrep or Visicol as a pre-colonoscopy bowel cleanser, you may be entitled to financial compensation.
Evidence shows that the maker of Phospho-soda knew, or should have known, about the potentially serious side effects of using Phospho-soda in a double dose as a bowel cleanser. Several lawsuits have already been filed on behalf of people across the country who have suffered acute kidney failure after using Phospho-soda or another OSPS as a bowel-cleanser prior to colonoscopy.
